- Decide if you are applying for for the MA or the MSc programme: this will depend on your previous studies and courses. You can find out more about the streams here. <link to Masters Programmes page>
- Decide which institution you would like to apply to: NEPTTP includes six Node institutions:
North-West University offers the MA programme.Sol Plaatjie University, the University of Limpopo, the University of Pretoria, and the University of Venda offer the MSc programme.
The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg offers both programmes.

- Submit an application to the University of your choice: click on the relevant logo below to visit their applications page.
Different insitutions sometimes require different documentation, but every university will ask you submit the following:
- A certified copy of your South Africa ID (for South African citizens) OR
- A certified copy of your passport and any relevant visas (for international applicants).
- Certified copies of your undergraduate and Honours transcripts, or any other postgraduate diplomas you have completed. If you are still completing your Honours degree, you will need to submit your latest transcript and/or your interim academic record.
- Certified copies of your undergraduate and Honours certificates, or any other postgraduate diplomas you have completed.
- If you completed any of your studies outside South Africa, you will need to provide a certificate of evaluation from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
It’s also always good to be prepared, so we recommend that you also try to have the following ready:
- Any academic references you have received.
- A copy of your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
For the MA programme:
Applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (NQF level 8 qualification) from a relevant discipline or field in the social sciences or humanities. Along with strong substantive knowledge in a relevant discipline or field, they must have a demonstrable knowledge of basic principles of quantitative social research (but need not have a previous specialisation in statistics or statistical computing). Applicants require a minimum of 65 percent in their NQF level 8 qualification to be considered, and they must fulfil any additional institutional application requirements of the institution through which they are applying, and must be co-approved by the Consortium.
For the MSc programme:
Applicants are required to have a Bachelor with Honours degree (NQF level 8 qualification) from a relevant discipline in Science or Engineering (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics) OR a relevant NQF level 8 qualification or a relevant Professional Engineering Degree with demonstrable knowledge of basic principles of Computing, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics. Applicants require a minimum of 65 percent in their NQF level 8 qualification and fulfill any additional institutional application requirements of the institution through which they are applying, and must be co-approved by the Consortium.
